Meet Karra James. A stint as a state ambassador for the Indiana Pork Producers sparked her interest in talking about agriculture with others. She always wanted to be a farm wife who actively helps on the farm. Now she helps her husband Derek on their family farm — with Derek’s parents — near Clay Center, Kansas. Karra helps with bookkeeping, caring for their cow/calf herd and doing field work to produce wheat, soybeans, milo and alfalfa.
With a degree in food science and experience working in the food safety field, Karra now teaches agriculture education sessions in area schools. Outside of farm life, she is passionate about her faith and family, and she enjoys traveling, reading and attending activites for her children Keaton, 10, and Allison, 7.
Karra was excited to join CommonGround in fall 2011 because she says she has always enjoyed talking about agriculture. She loves being able to raise her kids on the farm, teaching them same principles of hard work and appreciation for the land — just like she was raised.
